Miss Chi Vietnamese at Preston Center

Miss Chi is the latest fashionista to join the number of hipster Vietnamese restaurants in Dallas. Unlike the East Dallas gals like the nightowl, Dalat or the more serious Mot Hai Ba, Miss Chi is dressed in resort hues of citron and teal. Opened by Tanoshii Ramen owners, Chi and Joey Le,  she’s a welcomed addition to Preston Center but don’t let her bubbly personality fool you, there’s some authentic Vietnamese dishes to be had at Miss Chi.

First up, beef pho which is Pikelet & Lollo’s favorite. They ordered a combination of rare steak, meatball and brisket (there’s also a tendon option for those who want the real deal). For the upscale locale, we thought the pho was reasonably priced at $8.95 and was big enough for my boys (8 and 5 years old) to share. The beef pho hit the spot with a strong, aromatic broth that all good beef pho should have. Their only comment they boys had was that “the meat was a bit chewy” but they polished off their bowls nevertheless.

For our appetizers, we ordered tender baby clams sauteed with coriander. It was a hit on the table even for Baby Googie.

The steamed pork bun was not so. Part of it I think was expectations. The boys thought they were getting the Chinese BBQ steam pork buns (char siu bao) which they love. Instead, the steam bun with a pork meatball and egg mixture was too bland for everyone.

Thankfully my garlic fried tofu vermicelli (bun) saved the day. Usually I would order this with grilled pork or chicken but I decided to go vegetarian this time. The dish was light and yet filling. Beefcake followed suit with his vegetarian eggplant baguette (banh mi).

The menu suggested it was spicy but there wasn’t much kick to the roll. The baguette was done beautifully with a good crunch at first bite and soft dough on the inside but we wished it was more flavorsome.

The service was great and the staff were wonderfully accommodating and warm. Miss Chi will definitely be on our rotation for Vietnamese food when we don’t want to travel up to Richardson.
